In 2014, Rev. Dr. Charles M. Humber’s four children made their father’s New Testament research available to others. The book is titled Here & Hereafter and may be purchased for $20. Our biological father believed that the Bible is important for life on earth. It gives guidance for living our lives “HERE,” but it also gives guidance for the “HEREAFTER.” He sensed a tension involving Christians who stress one at the expense of the other. Some, to use the cliché, are so heavenly-minded (focusers on the “HEREAFTER”) that they are of no earthy good “HERE.” For example, they may not be interested in voting because it is a “HERE” activity. On the other hand, others live as though this “HERE” is the only life there is and seem oblivious that they are marching to death’s door and the “HEREAFTER.” Approximately a third of the New Testament’s verses are “HEREAFTER” oriented. The message is clear. Believers should think about the present, as two-thirds of the New Testament relates to the present world (“HERE”). It is foolish, therefore, for Christians not to participate in voting and other opportunities while “HERE.” But they also should not forget about the “HEREAFTER.”
